Campbell River’s Youth Has Invaluable Green Impact

What better way to learn about environmental gems & issues than tackling them hands on? At Greenways, we support environmental education in the public school curriculum. Our school programs allow students to connect with course material in a meaningful way – and connect with their environment. See here in # what the amazing students and teachers of School District 72 contributed to green’ing our community during school program 2017/18:

  • Over 30 classes participated in environmental projects run or supported by Greenways
  • That includes 700+ students
  • Over 750 native trees and shrubs were planted by school groups
  • 30 animal habitats were installed including chickadee boxes, mason bee houses, insect hotels and snake habitats
  • 100’s of kg of invasive plants were removed including Yellow Flag Iris, Himalayan Blackberry, English Holly, and others
  • 15 sites across Campbell River were impacted, included 4 sites/projects led by teachers, and 10 where Greenways has ongoing initiatives and one in collaboration with Fisheries and Oceans Canada
  • Educational activities both in the classroom and in the field facilitated students’ learning about the environment, biodiversity and ecological restoration
  • 2000+ volunteer hours were contributed by students, teachers and Greenways volunteers
