The Strathcona Good Food Box Program began in 2020, as a way to increase accessibility to fresh food during the COVID-19 pandemic. This program was designed to make fresh, healthy, and safe produce both physically and financially accessible to those in remote North Island communities and Campbell River.
For our Campbell River Good Food Box, we have partnered with Lush Valley Food Action Society in the Comox Valley. They source fresh, affordable produce from local growers and producers on Vancouver Island in order to reduce our ecological footprint and help us do our part to support local.
For our North Island communities, produce is ordered in bulk, delivered to the communities, repacked into boxes by our wonderful Community Coordinators and volunteers, and picked up at a central community location. Think of it like a produce subscription box but without any commitment!
This method of bulk-purchasing produce equates to 30-50% of city grocery store pricing and has the potentially to greatly reduce travel costs.
We are also currently able to provide subsidized boxes for low-income households.
