Indigenous Watersheds Initiative: Restoring Campbell River

The Indigenous Watersheds Initiative: “Revitalizing Campbell River” project is a unique partnership between the Wei Wai Kum Guardian Watchmen, the We Wai Kai Guardians and Greenways Land Trust. The project seeks to restore and protect natural areas within the Campbell River Watershed, while also educating the community about the importance of our local watersheds and the role of the First Nations’ Guardians as leaders of environmental stewardship in our community.

The Guardians are the designated stewards of their Nations, working on a wide variety of projects that protect, conserve, and restore the lands and waters within their territories. IWI has helped to highlight these important roles within our community, while encouraging a new generation of Guardians and stewards through our education programs with secondary students.

The IWI provides funding and support for Indigenous communities in BC that are advancing their watershed health and security and our partnership with the local Guardians is in line with their goals of restoring and protecting salmon habitat, and fostering a community of stewardship in future generations. IWI is working with us, and other communities throughout the province, on creating resilient watersheds that are rooted by local values and tied to Indigenous rights and title.
