Make a Lasting Gift Through Your Estate
A legacy gift is a future donation arranged through your will or estate plan. It lets you support conservation in the Campbell River region without affecting your finances today. These gifts help fund long-term stewardship, salmon habitat restoration, land protection, ecological monitoring, and education programs for generations to come.
One of the biggest challenges in conservation is caring for protected land long after it’s conserved. Legacy gifts build the funding that makes that possible. Whether it’s a bequest in your will, a beneficiary designation on an RRSP or life insurance policy, or a gift of securities or land, every legacy gift helps ensure the forests, streams, and wildlife you love stay protected for future generations.

My decision to leave a legacy gift to Greenways Land Trust is connected to the places that have shaped my life and the memories my sister and I shared growing up in the Campbellton neighbourhood. When we were kids, Baikie Island was an industrial area, very different from the healthy, vibrant ecosystem it is today. As we grew into adulthood, we had the privilege of watching Greenways restore the island into a place where nature could thrive. Over the years, my sister and I had many wonderful visits there, enjoying the birds, bears, plants, and other wildlife. These became meaningful places and experiences for both of us, and I am grateful that Greenways has helped preserve and restore them for our community.
Baikie Island became especially important to us in the final years of my sister's life. When she was living with terminal cancer a couple of years ago, we continued to visit because of its closeness to town and its easy, accessible trails. Those walks gave us precious opportunities to be together outdoors and to enjoy the beauty of a place we had both watched change over our lifetimes. I also deeply appreciate the improvements Greenways has made to the Spit over the years, making it an even more welcoming place for people and wildlife. Greenways'influence reached beyond the land itself: my sister was a teacher, and she was inspired by Greenways educational programs in Campbell River to start an invasive ivy pull project with the grade one students she taught in Victoria for ten years. That program has continued in her honour since she was taken from us. Leaving a legacy gift to Greenways feels like a way of honouring my sister, our shared connection to these places, and the importance of protecting and restoring nature for future generations.
