What We DoGreenways Land Trust... ...is an umbrella organization that works together with local stewardship groups to create and maintain greenways. Funding from various groups such as the Pacific Salmon Foundation and Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, make it possible for GLT to participate in many various projects yearly. We work towards increasing public education of the environment by planning events aimed at getting people outside and informed about what kinds of greenways the City of Campbell River has to offer. GLT also performs trail maintenance, most notably in the Beaver Lodge Forest Lands. We are strong advocates of healthy living in harmony with the natural environment and sustainable development that embodies those qualities. - Media Productions

The Discovery Coast Greenways Land Trust (GLT) is a charitable organization that works with volunteers and sponsors to build a better, more diverse community by improving and conserving natural areas. We support the activities of stream-keepers and stewards. Our resource centre provides equipment for field work, display materials, presentation A/V equipment, mapping capabilities and office equipment. Education and Public Outreach Projects  The GLT supports numerous training options for streamkeepers and the general public. A short list of past events included fundraising, project management, SmartGrowth Study, and GIS/GPS mapping and field training.

- The Land Trust organizes or helps with numerous community events to promote awareness and to support the cause of others. A few are: Oceans's Day, Campbell River Salmon foundation dinner, River's Day, Campbell River Volunteer Fair, Greenways Gallop, and the Haig-Brown Festival.
- Community Support
- To contribute to the future of communities, the GLT actively participated in numerous planning initiatives. The GLT is also part of the referral process for development applications to the District of Campbell River, and as such, provides comment on a number of development applications. A few have been the Official Community Plan reviews, development of Jubilee Heights, the Sayward Forest Plan review and heritage property designation.

- Numerous projects were supported or managed by the Land Trust. A few are: landowner contact, building weirs to store water, count adult and young salmonids, water flow and quality studies and stream restoration.
- GIS/GPS Mapping
- The Greenways Land Trust (GLT) has a contract GIS/GPS technician able to collect information and develop maps with a wide range of data including stream characteristics, landforms, vegetative types, wildlife distribution, and trail locations. Contracts have included the District of Campbell River Watershed Atlas and the Fisheries and Oceans Canada Historical Habitat Mapping. Watershed brochures are a sample of the versatility of GIS/GPS.

Greenways are corridors of land recognized for their ability to connect people and places. A greenway system is a group of protected lands linked together by habitat corridors. Some appeal to people, while others attract wildlife. Greenways can be:  - vegetated buffers to protect natural habitats, therefore improving water quality and reducing the impacts of flooding in floodplain areas.
- publicly or privately owned and some are the result of public/private partnerships.
- designated as ecological or recreational.
- recreational trails, boulevards or sidewalks.
Greenway Loop
The GLT supports and actively works towards the development of a 24km recreational loop around the City of Campbell River that can be accessed within 10 minutes of any residence. Projects include planning and loop development. Click here to see the map. Back to Top
To maintain and preserve our greenways, the Discovery Coast Greenways Land Trust is a member of the Land Trust Alliance of British Columbia (LTABC). LTABC supports land trusts, conservancies, and other related groups and interested individuals who care for our natural and cultural heritage. The GLT works with landowners to preserve and restore habitat. To assure quality, the GLT follows the LTABC's Standards and Practices. The Land Trust supports land conservation through a variety of ways: Land Donation
Ecologically sensitive or culturally important lands can be preserved through ownership by the Land Trust. We are a federally designated non-profit society that can provide receipts for donations of ecologically sensitive land for income tax purposes, as well as for donations of other land and assets. Direct Purchase
The Land Trust can also purchase land for habitat conservation through fundraising. Conservation Covenants Conservation covenants can preserve certain features of lands by limiting activities that land. A conservation covenant is placed on the land title and passes from landowner to landowner upon sale. The covenant is monitored by the land trust to ensure that the agreement is being followed. The Land Trust can provide support in designing and implementing conservation covenants.
